The North Sea fish stocks were spoiled, over-fished to the point of extinction and contaminated by an environmentally insecure offshore oil industry. Lighthouses and volunteer coast guard stations were replaced by automated, politically economical and unreliable electronics and an entire way of life washed away in the blink of a banker's jaundiced eye. Most Stained Glass Artists use traditional methods of construction.
They start by making a design on paper or utilising a ready made pattern.
This pattern or design is then either cut into it's respective pieces and
rendered to the surface of the glass, or a 'Light Box' is used to trace the design onto the glass. The glass is then cut to the required shape and edged with copper foil or lead came. All the individual pieces of glass are then assembled and soldered together.
I begin by cutting a piece of glass to form the base of the object I am creating. Then building up each additional section from there. I do not work from a pattern nor design, I cut each piece to fit the one before. I cut the glass, foil and solder it into position and then begin on the next section, measuring by eyesight only . This 'Primitive' method of construction allows me to let the work evolve as I proceed. To obtain the roughcast patina on the metalwork I use a mixture of copper and other chemicals. This method, combined with an unusual
mix of solder and fluxes and the inherent character of recycled copper wire and pipe ensures a unique finish which I think adds an extra degree of individuality. To construct the wooden bases I scour the sea shore for driftwood or use
offcuts of cedar and pine. Driftwood is ideal in many circumstances as it has a high concentration of salt and impurities which produce a random 'spalted' effect when a finish is applied. Using re-cycled metalwork, sea shore driftwood and employing a unique patina and 'primitive' stained glass construction techniques, JUST SHIPS is attempting to catalog our own unique maritime fishing enviroment before it too is washed away.
